At the Market: Individuality a-bloom

We can go to the market together, at last! Since we're in Montréal, we'll still be masked as so few of our neighbours and visitors are fully vaccinated, but that won't keep us from our morning of people-watching.

Early Saturday, a crowd comes early to buy their plants, so we see plenty of interesting touches.  Coloured jeans and joggers stand out; the blonde even has a matching mask:

(This season, I am usually blurring portraits of anyone I did not ask for permission to photograph; people have been through enough!)

Touches of red take black jeans into spring. Left, a red leather jacket, with cropped jeans and loafers, and (you can just make them out) red sunglasses. At right, a printed bag plays off a checked sweater.

Some stay in their light jackets; an ecru quilted style and a delicate floral:

Flower girl: waiting in her pink-sprigged dress for her family to join her and roll home together.

What I appreciate most are things I wouldn't necessarily wear, but which show someone's personality.

The young woman with the topknot wore voluminous, sheer white trousers, a celery jacket, and a brick-pink scarf—an unusual and arresting combination. The woman slinging her moto helmet wore a  "Shred in Peace" hoodie (and the back pocket detail on her jeans was interesting).

These looks are put together with an eye for what they like; regardless of age, means, and location, we can do the same. The important thing isn't a label or identifiable brand, it's just getting out in the sunshine, feeling the sun, and buying those dahlias and geraniums.

Love this post - the pretty colors on ordinary people of all ages and shapes makes me feel more hopeful somehow ! Today I’m wearing some cherry -red jeans like those on the second photo - I have a blue, pink, and cherry tee shirt but wouldn’t mind having a hoodie like the one she’s wearing !

Thank you. This is one of my favorite posts. So joyous and colorful. After a year + of avoiding people and not noticing others, will have to pull my observation skills from hibernation.

How wonderful to be back at the market! Montreal's markets are terrific, wish we had something like that here. Hoping that some of our farmers markets will be able to open but not counting on it. Thanks for sharing your enjoyment and your people watching.

I've been waiting for a post like this, which you do so well! Such creativity and exuberance, colour, happiness. Masks do not detract from this Montreal market! Keep these posts coming -- your observant eye plucks out such wonderful examples of individual style. No cookie cutters here!

Amen to getting out there and enjoying sunshine and spring and plants and cheery blooms! I am enjoying wearing lipstick (during family gatherings) and "remembering" all of my public clothes and wearing jewelry again! Huzzah for vaccines!

It is so wonderful to see people embracing colour! It really lifts one's spirit to see people out and about and doing their "thing" and showing their personality through what they wear. I know that personally I have been wearing lots of colour to lift my spirit as we have been locked down for ages.

I really enjoy your "people" posts!
