Designers often use big Chinese freshwaters, which supply the real estate for a sumptuous spread. This large baroque pendant, by Judi McCormick, is studded with sapphires, emeralds, London Blue topaz, apatites and tiny gold balls—just a gorgeous array. Price, $US 1, 895.
This is a perfect example of what to look for: lively stones, a glowing pearl, and a high level of craftsmanship. Visit Judy's site to see how she inlays various gems into her "Constellation" earrings, too.
Hisano Shepherd's "little h" line features her acclaimed, innovative techniques; she carves pearls, inlays gems into the concave spacesm and circles pearls with halos of precious stones—it's like nothing else.

When I saw my girlfriend Alice's Tahitian reno, I was crazy about her one Tahitian with an inset, bezeled yellow sapphire that Kojima Company slipped into the mix. Here's one of those beauties in another necklace, the Ocean Gift, that combines abalone, golden-mauve keshi, sterling silver beads, and that 15mm baroque Tahitian, set with a faceted champagne sapphire.
This is one of those pearl pieces you can wear very casually, but it's special. Price, $US 450.
