Spring break, spring move!

The Passage is closed for the weeks of March 17th and 24th.

Son Jules will move here April 1; we are delighted to have the family in one city again, and I've launched into full apartment-prep mode.

He'll have his first "very own place", a ten-minute bike ride from us.

Remember that, your apartment? Mine was only a bedsit–but oh, the freedom! A waterbed that leaked, orange crates for bookshelves, burlap drapes. Two Polish guys lived next door with their pet boa constrictor; I never visited.

What was yours?

The Passage reopens Tuesday, April 2; please drop by to meet a remarkable jeweler and, yes, there will be pearls!

Believe it or not, my first apartment was with my new husband when I was 22 years old. Lord, I was so young!

Wonderful that your son is moving to Montreal. Enjoy!

In 1984, I had a tiny room with a grand fireplace, and a tiny bathroom with a lion-footed bathtub - a very strange but cosy little place, once part of a larger flat.

I have been in the same place for more than 20 years now, it´s been a long time since I had the chance to do some decorating. It´s great that your son is cool with you getting involved! Have fun!

Haha! Mine was a NYC 2 room apt on a dark airshaft with the refrigerator in the living room. I was so thrilled.

In my last year of university I had a little apartment they called a Junior One Bedroom. The 'bedroom' was also the hall to the bathroom and the kitchen was in a closet. It was a step up from the single rooms in boarding houses that I'd been living in until then so I was very happy with it. Having a bathroom and kitchen of my own was blissful.

Kristien: Not that *you* did, but several of my friends married mainly to have their own apartments. Those were such different times, at least in the Midwest US!

Viktoria: I've always loved living in small places, cozy and charming, especially if they have vintage touches.

sisty: Isn't it remarkable what satisfies us just because it's finally- ours?

northmoon: Oh, I remember those juniors- alcoves, really! One's very own bathroom is a thrill. A friend of mine, from a family of 7, said she wept with joy when she closed the door and realized no one would bang on it and tell her not to "take all day in there".
