Mature and marvelous

Green coat (and gloves); taupe bag, scarf, and pants., with... purple desert boots. An object lesson in the advanced use of colour without a whiff of cuteness.

Scott Schuman at The Sartorialist shows us how one Parisienne lives up to her city's reputation for chic.

When I saw this photo I thought immediately of you and your posting several months ago about the Parisien notion of "strict" dressing -- if I've understood what you were describing then, this look seems to manifest elements of that strictness.

materfamilias: Yes, it's a 'playful strict'. It's also an aesthetic I admire more and more.

Oh I love this photo. And it looks so deceptively simple yet it could not be pulled off without thought and taste.

I adore this too, and am planning to do a polyvore riff on it. I think you need a bit of height to pull off the cropped pants, but she seems to have just what it takes to make this look formidable!

Pseu: There are different "cropped" lenths, non? This is barely cropped, almost an ankle pant- a length that I've seen worn for 30+ years in France.

That odd, shorter crop, about 4 inches below the knee that some wore over the last 2 years with heels is an awkward and unflattering length.

Ah, yes! Thanks for posting her! I immediately wanted to put her on my blog, but I've already used up the number of photos I can post from The Sartorialist for this month (he told me 3-4). Isn't she the best? It's especially her shortish pants/boots combo that does it for me.

Hmm....I'm going to have to look up your post about strict dressing.

I also agree with Duchesse's comment about the lengths of cropped pants. Have just been brushing up on that subject in my style bible, "The Pocket Stylist." If they're cropped at the narrow part of our leg (ankle) they can look great. I've given up wearing shorts and do that cropped thing with all my summer pants.

I too love this look but ..hell, there is always a "but". Where I live you just don't see this sort of thing and if you do.... $$$. I love the fact that this is a older woman ( its like we go away and die somewhere if you look in magazines -- hello! Where are we older women???)
The cropped pants work for this lady for she has the most important thing --- long legs. On stubby ones like mine - I would look like I was in my Mothers dressing gown. Sadly. I am crying now. LOL

lady jicky: You can't find this sort of thing? Or do you mean that people don't dress like this where you live?

Yes, that coat is expensive. My French friends (whether where I live or in Paris) don't buy as many clothes as I'm used to buying... and I have cut way back, preferring fewer but better clothes. And of have a price limit- might faint if I saw the price of her coat. But there is a way... as I keep saying, a good resale store is a marvelous thing!
